Get Your Gloves On!

Until the middle of the 20^th century a lady or gentleman would not leave home without their gloves, a tradition that goes back to Egyptian times where gloves have been found in the Royal tombs.

Later they played an important defensive role as part of a suit of armour or as gauntlets during duels, they remained however a symbol of status as they were worn in Royal courts from the renaissance onwards, always decorated with jewels & fur. This continued when they became symbols of cleanliness as well as elegance and lasted for several more centuries, until the 1950’s debutantes wore white gloves at coming out parties, opera gloves were worn to most evening events, gloves were worn to the races, lace gloves were worn in the summer.

It is only recently that they have become purely functional, only worn in colder months, this does not however mean that they must look utilitarian. Investing in a pair of lovely gloves can lift any outfit & make you feel polished even if you are just nipping out with the dogs!
