This collar is named after one of our lovely customers, Jacquie’s grandma. She wrote to us with the following story;
‘Ivy was one of 7 children who grew up in a small village in East Yorkshire. She went into service age 13 at ‘the big house’ and only got one day a month off. Her wages were sent home to her parents to help out. She met my Grandad when she was 21 and they married and had 4 children (mum being one of them). They moved to rural North Yorkshire and lived in a little cottage with two acres on which they kept two cows for milk and a couple of pigs reared for meat. Alongside looking after 4 children and doing the daily milking of the cows, Nannie Ivy also looked after an elderly (cantankerous!) Uncle who lived with them. Through the war Nannie held the family together and made sure there was always hearty food on the table and the house was scrubbed, children clothed and laughter was always at the ready despite often worrying and scary times.
Nannie Ivy loved to look in magazines at the latest clothes and trends and although money, opportunity and availability were lacking, she always looked polished and smart. She liked a trip into York or Harrogate for a little shopping spree every few months. She would have loved your blouses and shirt dresses if she had been alive now and able to use the Internet. I’ve no doubt she would have relished your wonderful videos. She lived to be 100 and received her telegram from the Queen.
She was neat, smart and strong with a big heart inside her.’
The Ivy seems a fitting tribute to another Ivy.
